How it works

1-hr and 24-hr PM2.5: which to use

The 1-hr PM2.5 reading reflects the past hour, so it shows the current air; MOH suggests using it for activities in the next hour, such as an outdoor run. The 24-hr PM2.5 averages the past 24 hours and feeds the 24-hr PSI, which MOH and NEA use for planning ahead. NEA explains that if 1-hr PM2.5 stayed in the Normal band for a full day, the 24-hr PSI would be roughly Good to Moderate; in the Elevated band, roughly Unhealthy; High, roughly Very Unhealthy; Very High, roughly Hazardous. What PM2.5 is

PM2.5 means fine particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller, the main pollutant in haze smoke. They are small enough to reach deep into the lungs. PM2.5 is a measured concentration in micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m³), not an index. NEA groups 1-hr readings into four bands: Normal (0–55), Elevated (56–150), High (151–250) and Very High (251 and above). Readings are in the Normal band about 99% of the time.
